A new era for fashion in Chile
Chile has positioned itself as the first country in Latin America to establish a Circular Economy Strategy for Textiles by 2040, a historic milestone that redefines how we conceive of textile production, consumption, and waste management. This strategy, presented by the Ministry of the Environment, proposes a profound transformation of the textile industry, aligning the country with international sustainability standards.
The Textile Circular Economy Strategy to 2040 is based on 18 initiatives and 47 concrete actions aimed at four main objectives:
- Reduce overconsumption of textiles.
- Promote circular jobs and trades.
- Increase the valorization of textile waste.
- Eradicate illegal dumps and informal waste disposal practices.
These goals are articulated through strategic axes:
- Circular Culture
- Circular Regulation
- Circular Territories
- Circular Innovation
Each one seeks to mobilize both companies and consumers towards a sustainable textile model, where responsibility and traceability are fundamental pillars.
How this development redefines the textile industry in Chile
The launch of this strategy marks a turning point in the fashion production and consumption system. Until now, the textile industry has operated under a linear model —produce, consume, and discard —generating enormous volumes of waste and pollution.
The circular approach, on the other hand, proposes extending the lifespan of products, promoting reuse, and designing garments intended for repair and recycling. This requires innovation, new supply chains, and a genuine commitment from all stakeholders in the ecosystem.
Velt's commitment to textile circularity
At Velt, we understand that sustainability is not a trend, but an ethical and technical responsibility. Since our beginnings, we have been committed to sustainable fashion in Chile, prioritizing the use of biodegradable packaging and low-environmental-impact processes.
Our 100% cotton sweatshirts are a concrete expression of that commitment. Natural cotton is a renewable, biodegradable, and durable fiber that significantly reduces the environmental footprint compared to synthetic materials derived from petroleum. By choosing cotton, we not only promote comfort and quality, but also consistency with the principles of the circular economy: designing with the future of the planet in mind.
In our brand, circularity translates into three lines of action:
- Responsible design: durable, timeless and repairable garments.
- Transparency: clear communication about garment materials in their description.
- Sustainable innovation: continuous development of water-soluble and compostable packaging that leaves no residue.
A structural change that requires collaboration
The transition to a circular textile industry in Chile requires environmental education, incentives for innovation, strengthening local communities, and multi-sector collaboration. This is a long-term process, but every action counts. By choosing brands with purpose, consumers become real agents of change.
Looking towards 2040: Velt's role in the transformation
“At Velt, we believe that the fashion of the future will be one that combines style, awareness, and science. Our mission is to demonstrate that it is possible to create clothing that inspires without harming, that projects identity without generating waste, and that provides not only aesthetic value, but also environmental and social value.”
The Textile Circular Economy Strategy to 2040 offers a robust framework for moving towards that vision. Velt will continue to integrate these principles at every stage of its value chain, being part of the change that Chile and the planet need.
